There are moments when you read a book and are in awe of it’s word magic that you want everyone to read it so you can discuss it’s many attributes. That book is THE DIRE KING by William Ritter. I knew the moment that I began reading this novel that I would become obsessed with it and I could not put it down until the very last word was devoured.
I was eager to return to this world that Mr. Ritter created and I was pleased that as I began reading THE DIRE KING I was carried back into this adventurous world and picking up soon after the eventful finale in GHOSTLY ECHOES. Jackaby and Abigail’s troubles have only just begun as their efforts to locate and destroy the dire king only seem to run into dead ends and those ends are coming up and walking the earth. Yes, that’s right zombies my dear ones. Just when I think I could not adore this series anymore, zombies make the scene and I am gruesomely intrigued as our Jackaby and his sleuthy co-horts.
As you can imagine this gruesome turn of events is evidence that the dire king is hell bent on dissolving the veil between the two worlds as he pushes technology and magic together to wreak havoc on both sides. The battle lines are being drawn but who remains friend or foe becomes blurred as the epic battle begins and not everyone will come out alive (dun dun dun) sorry folks you know this had to happen but I cannot say who or what. Just be prepared with some tissues.
Not only did I enjoy the every living action that this book carried throughout it’s pages but the romantic aspect was another of my favorite selling points. Abigail and Charlie seem to be getting closer and the next step is within reach while Jackaby cannot seem to reign in his feelings for Jenny as well as he used to be. It’s all very swoony at moments and it lends a bit of fluff when this novel seems to be everything but that.
To say that I am a big fan of this series is a mild understatement. I don’t think I can tell you how much reading enjoyment The Jackaby Series has given me and how I believe these gorgeous books need to be on everyone’s shelf. William Ritter out did himself with THE DIRE KING for it was an compelling read that slowly increased it’s intensity until it’s tumultuous finale that left me speechless and in tears. For fans of this series it is a must read and for those that have not had the pleasure of reading the JACKABY series the time is perfect to begin and you will not be sorry that you did.
