Good. Bad. Indifferent?
The Ravenous Readers have different feelings on sequels and we are here today to talk about them in light of Broody and his desire for 19,012 sequels (that’s a lot of back and forth with the love interest – a girl could get tired!).
Nancy – (somewhat) Pro Sequel & My Favs
Hello!!!!!! Just so you know I dislike sequels more than I like them. LOL! If a sequel is done well then I wholeheartedly support it. Yet, I will admit that there are more and more sequels that tend to disappoint me and my fickle heart.
I tend to favor duologies more than trilogies and don’t get me started on series that last more than three novels (with the exception of Harry Potter and the BDB). Another pet peeve are series that start off with a set amount of books then develop into a serious multi-series mess of words that don’t give a clean story and are just filler.
So, with all that being said I have a few series that I will love till the end of time due to either their characters that I could not get enough of or the world that I would want to live in or frankly both. If you have a great cast and impeccable plot (that doesn’t turn it’s character turning into a tree) then I am yours. Just don’t take 700 pages each book to get there.
Here are some of my favorites, and in NO order of preference.
- The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
- The Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward (still on going)
- The Puck series by Helena Hunting (still on going)
- The Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead (take out book 5)
- The Saints of Denver series by Jay Crownover
- The True Reign Series by Jennifer Anne Davis
- The Crashed Series by K. Bromberg

Ughhhhhhhhh. UGH. Sequels.
I know, you’re like, BUT CHRISTY, you get more of your favorite characters and worlds! Well, remember I am not a high/epic fantasy reader. So many sequels tend to be journey books, which I become immediately bored with. I am so about not dragging out a story. Give me a self contained story ANY DAY.
But I make exceptions. I am especially fond of standalones in a series. Maybe they’re set in the same world but around different characters. Maybe it’s a similar concept across the board. The American Horror Story of the book world. Yes.
Some standalones in a series you should check out:
- The Glittering Court
- This Raging Light / But Then I Came Back
- The Marked Men
- The Lady Janies
Of course, there are some really well done series. I adore The Young Elites by Marie Lu. Each book is short, sweet, and gets sh*t done. Book three is not a doorstopper!
