FOREST OF A THOUSAND LANTERNS Dream Cast

I’ve dreamed of being a published author since I was a kid! I never dreamed of having a TV show or a movie based on my book, though, because it seemed so unlikely and far out of reach. BUT, that being said, I love making Pinterest boards with actors and actresses I can envision as my characters. I always have their backstories, personalities, and motivations drawn out before I start writing, but seeing faces makes it that much easier to “get to know” them!

Here are some of the beautiful and talented people I saw as characters in FOTL:

Gong Li as Xifeng: I know the actress is in her 50s (!!!) but she has this steely, fiery, otherworldly beauty that I think is perfect for my ambitious main character.

Godfrey Gao as Wei: Xifeng’s childhood love, Wei, is a natural swordsman and I totally pictured him looking like Godfrey!

Ronald Lee Clark as Shiro: I can easily envision this actor as the handsome ambassador to Kamatsu who befriends Xifeng at the start of her journey.

Wang Kai as Emperor Jun: This actor has the chiseled face and cool eyes I imagine the Emperor of Feng Lu to have.

Deanie Ip as Empress Lihua: This Hong Kong actress has a regal, lovely face perfect for the dignified Empress who desperately wants a daughter to love.

C.S. Lee as Kang: I’ve always imagined Xifeng’s eunuch friend to have a sharp, intelligent face, and this actor fits the bill wonderfully.

Jiang Xin as Lady Sun: Xifeng’s archnemesis needs to be as quick-witted, sharp-tongued, and intelligent as she is beautiful. This actress would make a great Lady Sun!

FOREST OF A THOUSAND LANTERNS
by Julie C. Dao

Eighteen-year-old Xifeng is beautiful. The stars say she is destined for greatness, that she is meant to be Empress of Feng Lu. But only if she embraces the darkness within her.

Growing up as a peasant in a forgotten village on the edge of the map, Xifeng longs to fulfill the destiny promised to her by her cruel aunt, the witch Guma, who has read the cards and seen glimmers of Xifeng’s majestic future. But is the price of the throne too high? Because in order to achieve greatness, she must spurn the young man who loves her and exploit the callous magic that runs through her veins–sorcery fueled by eating the hearts of the recently killed. For the god who has sent her on this journey will not be satisfied until his power is absolute.

Set in an East Asian-inspired fantasy world filled with both breathtaking pain and beauty, Forest of a Thousand Lanterns possesses all the hallmarks of masterful fantasy: dazzling magic, heartbreaking romance, and a world that hangs in the balance. Fans of Heartless, Stealing Snow, and Red Queen will devour this stunning debut.
